First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove the casualty to fresh air, and if breathing is

difficult or ceases, give oxygen or mouth to mouth

resuscitation.  The casualty should be kept warm and at

rest.  Obtain medical attention.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes.  If in

doubt, obtain medical attention.

Emergency measure - Skin: Thoroughly wash all affected areas with soap and water.  If

in doubt, obtain medical attention.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Wash out mouth and give water to drink.  Obtain medical

attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Foam, carbon dioxide; dry agent and water.

Product arising from burning: The substance is highly flammable, so it will burn if

involved in a fire.  Noxious fumes may be evolved (eg.

ammonia and oxides of carbon and nitrogen), although there

is no experimental evidence on the nature of the combustion

products.

Protective equipment: It is advisable to wear breathing protecton.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: For minor spillages of powder mix with inert material (eg.

sand or soil), sweep up and transfer to containers for waste

disposal.  Uncontaminated material may be reclaimed using a

dust collector.  Absorb spillages of solutions with a

suitable inert material (eg. sand or soil), sweep up and

transfer to waste containers.  Dispose of this waste

material by incineration if practicable (in accordance with

Section A6.1.3) or at an authorised tip or landfill site in

conformity with local regulations or by a licensed waste

treatment processor.  After as much as possible of the

spilled material has been collected, wash the contaminated

area with water to the effluent drain.

Handling and storage

Handling: The substance should be stored, handled and used under

conditions of good industrial hygiene and in conformity with

any local regulations in order to avoid exposure.  Keep away

from sources of ignition.

Wear a dust mask (B.S. 2091), impervious plastic gloves and

safety spectacles when handling the substance.

Storage: Store away from sources of ignition.

Long term storage should be at a temperature of 0o to 5°C,

but ambient temperatures are acceptable for a short term.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Recovery from minor spillages or accidental discharge is not

economically or technically feasible, and such waste

material will be disposed of by incineration in accordance

with Section A6.1.3.  It may be possible to recover larger

spillages of powder for subsequent use.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: The only hazardous effect found from the Base Set tests is

that the substance is highly flammable.  This property will

be neutralised, however, because spillages of powder for

disposal and spillages of solutions will be mixed with inert

material (eg sand or soil).

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Waste material or spillages of powder and spillage of

solutions should be mixed with inert material (eg sand or

soil).  This waste material can then be disposed of at

anauthorised tip landfill site, in conformity with local

regulations.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance could be disposed of by burning under

controlled conditions by a licensed waste processor.  Since

this process may evolve noxious fumes (eg. ammonia and

carbon and nitrogen oxides), stack gases may need to be

scrubbed.  The substance is highly flammable, so appropriate

precautions for incinerating such materials must be taken,

and it is advisable to dilute the substance with other

non-flammable materials before incineration.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance should not normally be discharged to the

sewage system or the aqueous environment.  The substance is

not likely to have adverse effect on sewage treatment

systems following accidental discharge, however, because it

has been shown to be essentially readily biodegradable.
