Description of key information

The 72 hour EC50 based on growth rate was determined to be 40 mg/l, while the 72 hour NOEC was determined to be 4.4 mg/l. These results are based on time weighted average concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
40 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
4.4 mg/L

Additional information

A 72 hour algal growth inhibition test was carried out in accordance with OECD 201 in order to determinde the toxicity of phenylethyl acetate toPseudokirchnerilla subcapitata.Following a preliminary range finding test,P. subcapitatawas exposed to an aqueous solution of the test item at concentrations of 1, 3.2,10, 32 and 100 mg/l for 72 hours under constant illumination and shaking at a temperature of 24 ± 1 °C. Algal samples were removed daily and cell concentrations were determined using a particle counter.

Analytical measurements were taken at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours to determine test concentrations.

The 72 hour EC50 based on growth rate was determined to be 40 mg/l, while the 72 hour NOEC was determined to be 4.4 mg/l. These results are based on time weighted average concentrations.
