Pre-test for melting point

The following observations were recorded:

From 150 °C: The test substance was slightly shrivelled with condensate

From 320 °C: The colour was darker

From 349 °C: The colour was nearly black

Up to 360 °C: The test substance was black and shrivelled, no signs of melting were observed, decomposition was considered.

After cooling down: The test substance stayed as a compacted solid

Selected temperature was 360 °C, the capillary tube containing the test substance was set into channel 2 of the instrument at 21.0 °C

In the additionally pre-test on a magnesia groove with the gas burner, the test substance shrivelled, charred and glowed.

Security Pre-test for the DSC instrument

The lid of the crucible was bloated after reaching a temperature of 600 °C. The weight was recorded with 33.46 mg.

Calibration

The measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria.

Interpretation of the measurements

Two DSC measurements were performed.

In the first measurement, an unsteady baseline between 100.02 °C and 165.03 °C was detected.

In the second measurement an exothermic event from 92.38 °C to 182.42 °C with an unsteady baseline was detected.

The unsteady baseline and exothermic event could be signs of decomposition, as the condensate was seen in the pre-test and the test substance had shrivelled slightly, as well as the colour change.

Therefore, no melting point can be given under these test conditions as the test item has decomposed.

The decomposition process is given in the range of 92.38 °C - 182.42 °C.

Assessment

The DSC measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria.

Therefore, the result of the study is considered valid.
