Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
The test substance is a dark brown coloured, odourless solid powder.
Melting point of the test substance is > 180 °C. The test substance melts under decomposition, therefore no boiling point could be measured.
The relative density of test item at ambient temperature (compared to water at 4 °C) is D4R = 1.21.
The vapour pressure of test item was found to be <0.000001 hPa at 20 °C.
The partition coefficient n-octanol/water of the test item at 20 °C, estimated from the individual solubility in water and n-octanol, was determined to be log Pow <- 4.3
The water solubility of the test item determined according to OECD guideline 105 was found to be>551 g/L at 20 °C (without correction for purity).
No data regarding surface activity are currently available for Reactive Black 5, but data on the bis-vinyl form demonstrate a surface activity. Therefore, surface activity is also expected for the reactive form of the molecule.
Because the test substance is a solid a flash point was not determined. In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, information requirement section 7.9, this study does not need to be conducted based on the physical state of the substance. According to ECHA guidance, flash point is only relevant to substances that are liquid at room temperature.
Auto-flammability of the test substance determined in a screening test according to Grewer is >180 °C and ignition of dyestuff at room temperature by a flame did not spread fire.
Analysis of the chemical structure reveals at least two azo groups being present in the molecular structure representing chemical alert structures for explosive properties. The calculated chemical oxygen balance is above the trigger value of -200, but the determination of the exothermic decomposition energy demonstrated an energy release below the critical value of 500 J/g. Therefore, the substance is considered to be non-explosive according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and no further testing is required.
An evaluation of the chemical structure of test item showed that most likely it has no oxidizing properties, in addition it was shown that the test substance is oxidized in the differential thermo analysis (DTA). Data from several other vinyl sulphone dyes with very similar structure did not show oxidizing properties. In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VII, this study does not need to be conducted as this substance is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials on the basis of its chemical structure.
The test substance has an extremely high water solubility and a very low solubility in organic solvents. Stability in organic solvents is not relevant for the use of the test substance.
The dissociation constant of the test substance at room temperature (circa 22 °C) was determined within this study as pKa between 1.90 and 2.89 for the acid range, using the five mean values of three experiments. The pKa value for the alkaline range was determined within this study as pKa between 8.93 and 10.16 based on five mean values obtained from of three experiments.
