Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From 27 February 2018 to 26 April 2018
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
Version / remarks:
Edition 2015
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
Identification : MALTITOL
CAS No. : 585-88-6
EC No. : 209-567-0
Batch ELEL7
Appearance White powder
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Neither ignition nor propagation of the combustion was observed in the two assays performed during the preliminary test.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
Maltitol was not classified as a flammable solid of Division 4.1 and thus was not assigned to any packing group, under the experimental conditions used.
According to (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP), the test item was not classified.
Executive summary:

The flammabililty of Maltitol was assessed according to the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Manual of tests and Criteria Sixth revised edition (2015) Test N.1 (Part III, Section 33.2.1.4), and in compliance with GLP.

In a preliminary screening test, a powder train of about 250 mm long is performed to determine if, on ignition by a gas flame, propagation by burning with flame or smouldering occurs.

The test item melted. However neither ignition nor propagation of the combustion was observed in the two assays performed within the 2 min period .

Maltitol was not classified as a flammable solid of Division 4.1 and thus was not assigned to any packing group, under the experimental conditions used.

According to (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP), the test item was not classified.

This flammability study is classified as acceptable, and satisfies the guideline requirements of the Manual of tests and Criteria Sixth revised edition (2015) Test N.1 (Part III, Section 33.2.1.4).

Justification for classification or non-classification

In a preliminary screening test, a powder train of about 250 mm long is performed to determine if, on ignition by a gas flame, propagation by burning with flame or smouldering occurs.

The test item melted. However neither ignition nor propagation of the combustion was observed in the two assays preformed within the 2 min period . According to (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP), the test item was not classified as a flammable solid.
