Whether inhaled or swallowed, nitrites can produce anoxic states.
The administration of nitrites by any route can produce profound
methemoglobinemia. Tissue anoxemia can result from
methemoglobinemia (Darling and Roughton 1942; Lester andGreenburg 1944). Severe methemoglobinemia can result from
deliberate inhalation of room odorizer products (Home et al. 1979;
Shesser et al. 1981; Guss et al. 1985). Ingestion can produce a more
rapid and malignant methemoglobinemia than can inhalation and can
be lethal (Dixon et al. 1981; Shesser et al. 1980; Shesser et al. 1981;
Smith et al. 1980; Wason et al. 1980) In addition, the alkyl nitrites are metabolized to nitrite ions and the corresponding alcohol, which may lead to delayed deaths or hepatotoxicity Intraperitoneal -Amyl- LD50 - Mouse 130 mg/kg Dewey et al. 1973 (111-152)
