Description of key information

According to Annex IX column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, long-term toxicity tests shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms. Hexagonal boron nitride is an inorganic crystalline solid covalent nitride with a high chemical inertness (1). It is inert to concentrated and dilute hydrochloric and nitric acid, aqua regia, and alkali solutions at the boiling temperature (2) and it is practically insoluble in water (see section 4.8 of the IUCLID dossier).

Therefore, following the criteria of REACH Annex IX, point 9.1, column 2, and in addition for animal welfare reasons, a long-term toxicity study in invertebrates is not considered to be required.
