Calculation of Results

Equations

Density of Test Item

The density of the test item was calculated using the following equation:

ρ = [(m3– m1) / (m2– m1)] * ρH2O

with

ρ = density in g/cm3

m1= mass of empty pycnometer in g

m2= mass of pycnometer with water in g

m3= mass of pycnometer with test item in g

ρH2O = density of water at test temperature (0.9982 g*cm-3at 20.0 °C)

The relative density of the test item has the same number value, but no unit.

Calculation of Error

The error of the determination method can be calculated from:

∆ρ = [(2*∆m*100%) / m3–m1)] + [(2*∆m*100%) / m2– m1)]

with

∆ρ = relative error of the measured density

∆m = absolute error of single weighing (0.0003 g)

Calculation of Relative Standard Deviation

The RSD was calculated as followed:

RSD = (sd*100) / density mean

RSD = Relative Standard Deviation in %

sd = Standard Deviation in g*cm-3

The following values were calculated.

Conclusions:
The density of the test item Petroleum Resins (Kendex 0897) was calculated as 0.9081 ± 0.0036 g/cm3 at 20 ± 0.4 °C. This value is the mean of two independent determinations ± the standard deviation. Standard deviation shows good correlation of the two determinations.
Executive summary:
