Assessment:

The biodegradability of 2-piperidinoethanol was assessed in a GLP study according to OECD Guideline 301B. The degradation of the test item was determined to be 102±12% CO2/ThCO2 (mean±SD) after an exposure period of 28 days (BASF, 2019, Rep. No.: 22G0154/18G381). The degree of biodegradation at the end of the ten-day window was approx. 52% CO2/ThCO2 (mean value). Hence, the required pass level for ready biodegradability in accordance to the OECD Guideline 301B (at least 60% of the theoretical CO2 production must be attained within 10 days of the degradation exceeding 10% within the 28-day period of the test) was not accomplished. Therefore, 2-Piperidinoethanol fails the OECD criteria for ready biodegradability in this carbon dioxide evolution test according to OECD 301B. This result was selected as key result.

Additionally in a batch test according to OECD 302B, 2-piperidinoethanol was easily eliminated from water (BASF, 1985, Report No. 1251) after 18 days (100% DOC removal). However, a lag phase of approx. 10 days and the sigmoidal shape of the elimination curve are evidences for the inherent biodegradability of the test substance. This result was selected as supporting study.

The ready biodegradability was also assessed using the BOD 28 days MITI (OECD 301C) model (v11.16) of CATALOGIC v5.14.1.5 (BASF, 2021). The degradability was 78% (O2 consumption). The test substance was found to be readily biodegradable in water according to the BIOWIN v4.10 model of EPI Suite v4.11 (BASF SE, 2018). The substance was within the applicability domain of both models. These results were selected as supporting studies.

In conclusion, the substance is assessed to be readily biodegradable but failing the 10-day window (according to OECD criteria).
