According to regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, A. 14 the test on explosive properties “need not be performed when available thermodynamic information (e.g. heat of formation, heat of decomposition) and/or absence of certain reactive groups in the structural formula establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the substance is incapable of rapid decomposition with evolution of gases or release of heat (i.e. the material does not present any risk of explosion)”. Zinc dipropionate does not contain any chemical groups associated with explosive properties and the heat of decomposition is negative (see section 4.2 Melting point DCS curve). Therefore, both criteria are met and the test does not need to be performed.

Zinc dipropionate does not contain any chemical groups associated with explosive properties and the heat of decomposition is negative.
According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) of the United Nations, zinc dipropionate does not have to be classified as explosive. According to the criteria of REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008 and its subsequent adaptations, zinc dipropionate does not have to be classified and has no obligatory labelling requirement for explosivity.
