Additional information

Trichloro(4-methylphenyl)silane (CAS 701-35-9) is expected to hydrolyse rapidly under environmental conditions (half-life < 1 min at pH 4-9 and 1.5 °C). Since the parent compound is unstable in the environment, the assessment is based on the hydrolysis products in accordance with ECHA guidance for Chemical Safety Assessment (Chapter R.16, 2016). The hydrolysis products are (4-methylphenyl)silanetriol and hydrochloric acid.

The substance is not readily biodegradable (1% biodegradation after 28 d and 0% after 60 d) as appropriate read across data reveal. The silanol hydrolysis product (4-methylphenyl)silanetriol bears a low volatility (<2.9E-4 Pa at 25 °C), is water soluble (520 mg/L at 20-25 °C) and has a low adsorption potential (calculated log Koc = 0.708). On this basis the silanol hydrolysis product is expected to distribute mainly in the water column. Environmental parameters and behavior of the other hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid is described in the SIDS Initial Assessment Report (OECD, 2002).
