Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- In conclusion, using the laser diffraction method to study the particle size of Lot 1846-B ranging between 0.04 µm and 704 µm, the mass median diameter (MMD) was determined to be 1.331 µm.
The particle size distribution was found to range from approximately 0.3 µm to 10 µm. - Executive summary:
In the present study (Sayer 2010) the particle size distribution of beryllium oxide (sample: UOX Lot 1846 -B) was tested using the laser differaction method.
The mass median diameter (MMD) was determined to be 1.331 µm and the particle size distribution was found to range from approximately 0.3 µm to 10 µm.
The test item was measured in dispersion (deionized water with a surfactant, sonificated) at room temperature using a Microtrac® X100 (Particle size range: 0.04 µm to 704 µm, standard program) and the final value derived as average of 3 measurements. A check sample with a known particle size distribution is tested before and after analysis. The percentile distribution and mean volume results are compared with the known check sample values to verify test equipment accuracy.
Brush Wellman’s laboratory performed this analysis and is ISO 17205 certified.
