Conclusions:
FORMAMIDOPROPYLBETAINE is auto-ignitable with an auto-ignition temperature of 425 °C.
Executive summary:

The determination of the auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was performed in accordance with EEC-Directive 92/69 EEC, A 15 "Auto-Ignition temperature (liquids and gases), 1992", DIN 51794 "Bestimmung der Zündtemperatur" (1978) and IEC standard 79-4: Method of test for ignition temperature (1975).

Three tests were performed. In each test, different volumes of test substance were injected successive times into a test vessel. The temperature in the test vessel was lowered gradually from a sufficienty high temperature until a temperature at which it was obvious that no more ignition occurred. The lowest measured auto-ignition temperature was 429 °C at an injection volume of 90 µL. In accordance with DIN 51794, this temperature was rounded down to the nearest 5 °C giving the auto-ignition temperature for the test substance. In conclusion, FORMAMIDOPROPYLBETAINE is auto-ignitable with an auto-ignition temperature of 425 °C.

Description of key information

no self-ignition up to the decomposition temperature (EU method A.16; RL1; no data on GLP); read-across: C8-18 AAPB

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No experimental data are available for the substance itself. However, reliable data are available for the closely related source substances C8 -18 AAPB and Formamidopropylbetaine.

The relative self-ignition temperature of C8 -18 AAPB was investigated in a study conducted according to EU Method A.16 (Relative Self-Ignition Temperature for Solids). C8 -18 AAPB is a solid, powdery substance which decomposes above 208°C. Up to the decomposition temperature (208°C) no self-ignition temperature was observed.

The determination of the auto-ignition temperature of Formamidopropylbetaine was performed in accordance with EEC-Directive 92/69 EEC, A 15 "Auto-Ignition temperature (liquids and gases), 1992", DIN 51794 "Bestimmung der Zündtemperatur" (1978) and IEC standard 79-4: Method of test for ignition temperature (1975).

Three tests were performed. In each test, different volumes of test substance were injected successive times into a test vessel. The temperature in the test vessel was lowered gradually from a sufficiently high temperature until a temperature at which it was obvious that no more ignition occurred.

Due to close structural similarities no self-ignition temperature up to the decomposition temperature is expected for the target substance C8-10 Alkylamidopropyl betaine.
