The procedure is similar or equivalent to the method described in VDI 2263 sheet 1:

A 8 ml cylindrical fine-mesh wire basket is filled with the test substance. The same is done with graphite as reference. Both samples are heated electrically in an air stream and the temperature inside the two samples is recorded. At the onset temperature the temperature of the test substance exceeds that of the reference measurement. Classification as self-heating is required when the onset temperature is below 220°C
