Description of key information
Pigment additive KR 1789 Stck. Ber. 100%(CAS 85650-96-0): Moderately/partly biodegradable
Oleylamine (CAS 112-90-3): Biodegradable, but not readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
Due to structure and low water solubility, biodegradation of Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901 -96 -4) is not expected.

The Pigment additive KR 1789 Stck. Ber. 100% (CAS 85650-96-0) is composed of Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) and oleylamine (CAS 112-90-3).
Oleylamine (CAS 112-90-3):
The ready biodegradability of oleylamine (CAS 112-90-3) was assessed in a study conducted according to ISO DIS 9439 which is similar to OECD Guideline 301B (Boutonnet, 1992). The test substance was biodegradable, though not readily biodegradable because the criterion of degradation, >60% within a 10 day window after start of biodegradation phase (10%); the 10-day window was not met. Therefore, the test substance was considered to be biodegradable, but not readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria. These data are supported by the results of an OECD 301D guideline study (van Ginkel & Stroo, 1992). The biodegradation of the test substance was 44% at day 28 and 72% at day 42. The authors claim the test substance should be classified as biodegradable, but not biodegradable according to OECD criteria. In a further test according to OECD 301F the test substance was considered to be inherently biodegradable, based on a biodegradation of 69% by day 28 (Voelskov, 1994). In a further supporting study conducted according to OECD 302C the substance was easily eliminated from water; biodegradation was >60% after 12 days of exposure (Yoshimura et al., 1980). All studies used activated sludge from WWTPs treating municipal sewage, with the only exception of the study by Voelskov (1994) using industrial activated sludge. The study by Boutonnet (1992) was selected as key study based on the documentation of the study, while the other results were selected as supporting data.
Oleylamine (CAS 112-90-3) is assessed to be biodegradable, but not readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4):
Due to the chemical structure and the extremely low water solubility of Phthalocyanines, biodegradation of Copper phthalocyanine monosulfonic acid (CAS 28901-96-4) is not expected. However, there are data on the biodegradability of single Phthalocyanines available. The biodegradability of Copper phthalocyanine (CAS 147-14-8) was tested in a study following OECD guideline 301 F using domestic activated sludge as inoculum [BASF AG 1988]. After 28 days of inoculation a degradation rate of less than 1 % was determined. The test results support the assumption that Phthalocyanines are only poorly biodegradable.

The biodegradation potential of the target item itself, the pigment additive KR 1789 Stck. Ber. 100% (CAS 85650-96-0), was studied in a test performed according to OECD guideline 301A using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. Based on CO2-evolution, biodegradation was >30 - <40% after 28 days of exposure.
