Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Bulk calcium carbonate is not acutely toxic to terrestrial organisms

Additional information

Three reliable OECD guideline studies are available which demonstrate the effects of uncoated nano calcium carbonate on terrestrial species. The species studied were Eisenia foetida (earthworm), plants (soybean, tomato and oat) and soil microorganisms. The tests were all performed as limit tests using an uncoated nano calcium carbonate concentration of 1000 mg/kg. The results of these studies demonstrate that the concentration of uncoated nano calcium carbonate that might cause toxicity to terrestrial species is greater than the highest concentration tested and is therefore greater than the maximum solubility of calcium carbonate in water. On this basis, uncoated nano calcium carbonate is not acutely toxic to terrestrial organisms and PNECs for the terrestrial compartment have not been derived.

The results from studies performed with uncoated nano calcium carbonate are directly applicable to bulk calcium carbonate.
