Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
- Black liquor is not considered to have a flash point at <200 oC.
- Data waiving is based on column 2 of Annex VII (7.9) in the REACH regulation stating that testing of flash point is not required if the estimated flash point is >200°C.
- Black liquor was not flammable in the preliminary flammability test (4.13). The test substance did not ignite until 2 minutes while heating with hot gas flame and did not burn over a length of 200 mm within 4 minutes. Therefore determination of flash-point of Black liquor is not required.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Black liquor did not ignite until 2 minutes while heating with hot gas flame and did not burn over a length of 200 mm within 4 minutes. Therefore determination of flash point of Black liquor is not required. The tested sample contained 47.3 % water/52.7% dry solids.
In its normal chemical state no volatile flammable constituents are evolved from Black liquor (no flash point). However, Black liquor may evolve flammable gas if the substance properties are changed. A danger of evolution of flammable H2S gas may emerge if the pH of the substance is lowered from alkaline to neutral (pH 7) or acidic (pH <7).
