Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Fatty acids, C16 -18, zinc salts is readily biodegradable and fatty acids degrade via the β-oxidation pathway. The environmental fate and distribution of the dissociation products of this substance in water are better assessed according to the dissociation products in water as follows:

(i) the mechanisms for partitioning of Zn2+ in environmental media, including the adsorption and/or absorption by organic matter and living cells, are understood to be different from those traditionally attributed to carbon-based substances. For the transport and distribution of zinc in different environmental compartments, please refer to the respective endpoint summary of the assessment entity "Zinc".

(ii) Using QSAR (KOCWIN v2.00, EPI Suite v4.1), the log Koc values of hexadecanoic acid and octadecanoic acid were estimated based on the respective logKow with 4.12 and 4.71 (corresponding to Koc values of 13,230 and 51,050 L/kg), respectively. QSAR estimates indicate an affinity of fatty acids to solid phases. However, C16 -18 fatty acids are readily biodegradable and thus are not expected to accumulate in the environment.

Please refer to the endpoint summary of the respective assessment entity for further details.
