Description of key information

The result from the key study using WAFs was a 48h-EL50 = 15 mg/l.
The NOEL for growth rate was below a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 1 mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
15 mg/L

Additional information

In a key study the acute toxicity of Nutmeg oil towards with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was determined. Nutmeg Oil, Myristica fragrance oil reduced growth rate and inhibited the yield of this fresh water algae species significantly in a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 3.2 mg/l, corresponding to a measured carbon concentration of 0.7 mg/l.

The 48-h EL50 for growth rate reduction (ERL50: 0-48h) based on loading rates was 15 mg/l with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 6.4 to 35 mg/l.

The 48-h EL50 for yield inhibition (EYL50: 0-48h) based on loading rates was 5.3 mg/l with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 2.4 to 12 mg/l.

The 48-h NOEL for growth rate reduction equalled a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 1.0 mg/l. The NOEL for yield inhibition was below a WAF prepared at a loading rate of 0.32 mg/l.
