Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

A reliable bioconcentration study is available for octylphenol (OP). Tsuda et al. (2001) presented BCF result of 261, based on whole body wet weight, for Oryzias latipes.

Bioconcentration for nonylphenol was also considered for octylphenol using read-across to support this finding.

BCFs for nonylphenol were determined by Brooke (1993) for juvenile Pimephales promelas and Lepomis macrochirus to be 740 and 231, based on whole body wet weight, respectively.

Therefore, a BCF of 740 for fish would be a conservative value for OP bioconcentration.

This value was experimentally derived for nonylphenol in a reliable study using the preferred fish species. Since nonylphenol has a higher Kow and the experimental BCF data for nonylphenol is also higher than that for octylphenol, such a value is expected to be conservative for octylphenol.

No experimental data for bioaccumulation of OP in terrestrial species is available. Therefore, the BCF for earthworms is calculated using measured LogKow data (4.8 at 22 °C and pH 6; see IUCLID section 4.7).

The BCF is calculated using the ECHA Equation R.16-76 (BCFearthworm= (0.84+0.012Kow)/RHOearthworm; with RHOearthworm= 1 (kg wwt/L) by default), is 758.

The BCF of 758 is recommended for OP bioconcentration in this risk assessment.

According to Annex XIII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.11 (PBT Assessment, ECHA (2008)), a substance does not fulfil the criteria “bioaccumulative (B)” or “very bioaccumulative (vB)” if the bioconcentration factor (BCF) is below 2000 or 5000, respectively, or the log Kow is below 4.5.

With reference to experimental data for octylphenol, read-across from the available reliable experimental data for nonylphenol and the calculated BCF for earthworms, it is concluded that OP is not bioaccumulative within the PBT criteria.
