Additional information

Modelling indicates that the substance will be mobile in water with negligible adsorption to sediment. It can be assumed that the outcome of tests through exposure to sediment pore water will not differ significantly from that arising through exposure in the overlaying water and, as a result, hazards resulting from uptake of sediment can be excluded. These assumptions are supported by tests conducted in sediment and the overlying water column:

Tests have been performed with the freshwater invertebrate Chironomus tentans to determine the acute toxicity of diethyl phthalate in sediment. The ten-day LC50 value was > 3100 mg/kg d.w. In addition, tests have been performed with the freshwater invertebrates Hyalella azteca, Chironomus tentans, and Lumbriculus variegatus to determine acute toxicity in the overlying water column. Ten-day LC50 values for the three benthic species were determined in water without sediment present. Values were - for Hyalella azteca 4.21 mg/L, Chironomus tentans 31.0 mg/L and Lumbriculus variegatus 102 mg/L.
