Data on measured environmental concentrations of BMDBM were selected to be used in the characterisation of local and regional PECs in the environmental exposure and risk assessment. In many cases measured concentrations of BMDBM were below the limit of detection of respective analytical methods. All available measured data points were below the limit of detection for some environmental media. In these cases, a concentration of BMDBM corresponding to the highest limit of detection was used in the exposure calculation and environmental risk assessment. The following measured concentrations were used in the assessment:

Lake water: 9.9 ng/L (Remberger et al. 2011)

Seawater: 24 ng/L (Giokas et al. 2004)

Freshwater sediment: 10 ng/g dry matter (Remberger et al. 2011)

Marine sediment: 5 ng/g dry matter (Schlabach et al. 2009)

Wastewater, effluent: 14 ng/L (Remberger et al. 2011)

Sewage sludge: 517 ng/g dry matter (Rodil et al. 2009)

In the majority of cases, the measured concentrations in the environment are clearly lower by some orders of magnitude than modelled concentrations in the same compartments, if defaults of EUSES are used in the modelling and environmental emissions are derived by standard procedures. Also the predicted concentrations in aquatic organisms are clearly above those measured in fish or mussels.
