Principles of method if other than guideline:
The flash point was determined with a closed cup tester, by an equilibrium method "Small Scale", commonly known as Setaflash.
The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the test liquid in a closed test vessel evolves vapours, under the conditions defined in the test method, in such amount that a flammable vapour/air mixture is produced in the test vessel.
In the Setaflash method, the vapours are deemed to be in temperature equilibrium with the liquid. The test item is placed in a vessel which is progressively heated until the vapours reach a sufficiently high concentration in air to produce a flammable mixture which can be ignited by a flame.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
equilibrium method closed cup
Key result
Flash point:
31.3 °C
Atm. press.:
ca. 1 atm

Available Data for Reference Items:

Flash point of butanol (CAS No. 35296 -72 -1) : 35°C, closed cup (Sigma Aldrich Safety Datat Sheet)

Flash point of N,N Dimethylformamide (CAS No.68 -12 -2) : 58°C, closed cup (Acros Safety Datat Sheet)

Flash point of Setaflash Certified Material 99878 -3 : 74.5°C (Certificate of Measurement provided)

Measured flash point of the test item and reference items (°C):

Substance or mixture   Assay No.1  Assay No.2
  (-)-ALPHA PINENE  31.3 31.3
 butanol (CAS No.35296 -72 -1) 35.8  35.4
 N,N Dimethylformamide (CAS No.68 -12 -2)  57.7  57.5
 Setaflash Certified Material 99878 -3, batch 161506E  74.3  75.0

According to the results obtained with the reference items, the test has to be considered as valid.

Interpretation of results:
Category 3 (flammable liquids) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The flash point of (-)-alpha-pinene was determined to be 31.3°C.
Therefore, the substance is classified as flammable category 3 (H226) according to Regulation (EC) n°1272/2008 (CLP) and as flammable (R10) according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD).
Executive summary:

The flash point was determined with a closed cup tester by an equilibrium method "Small Scale", commonly known as Setaflash where the vapours are deemed to be in temperature equilibrium with the liquid. The study was based on the procedures indicated by the following internationally accepted methods:

- ASTM D 3828 -97: Standard Test Methods for Flash Point by Small Scale Closed Tester.

- EU method Part A, A.9

Two measurements were performed.

The flash point of the substance (-)-alpha-pinene was determined to be 31.3°C.

Therefore, the substance is classified as flammable category 3 (H226) according to Regulation (EC) n°1272/2008 (CLP) and as flammable (R10) according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD).

Description of key information

The flash point of (-)-alpha-pinene was determined to be 31.3°C.

The substance is classified as flammable (R10) according to Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD) and as flammable liquid cat. 3 according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
31.3 °C

Additional information

The flash point of (-)-alpha-pinene was determined in a study performed according to ASTM D 3828-97 method and EU method A.9.

The value was considered with a reliability of 2 (reliable with restrictions) because the result is scientifically acceptable but not obtained under GLP and some details were lacking in the report. However the measured flash point is valid for key value and supported by consistent experimental data obtained with alpha-pinene multiconstituent.
