Study design
- Analytical monitoring:
- yes
- Details on sampling:
- An aliquot of each test system was removed at test intiation, 2.4 hours, and 120 hours and analyzed neat using high performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection (HPLC/Rl) for percent hydrolysis. The date, time, appearance, pH, temperature of the water bath, and temperature of the room where the analysis was performed were recorded for each sample.
- Buffers:
- pH = 4 Buffer (0.01 M Sodium acetate)
Approximately 0.8 g of anhydrous sodium acetate was dissolved per liter of distilled water and the pH adjusted to approximately 4.0 with glacial acetic acid.
pH = 7 Buffer (0.02 M Phosphate buffer)
Approximately 1.4 g of potassium phosphate monobasic anhydrous and 1.7 g of potassium phosphate dibasic anhydrous were dissolved per liter of distilled water.
pH = 9 Buffer (0.025 M Sodium Borate buffer)
Approximately 9.5 g of sodium borate decahydrate were dissolved per liter of distilled water. - Details on test conditions:
- PREPARATION OF TEST SOLUTIONS
Test systems were prepared by weighing approximately 0.1 g of the test substance into three separate 50-mL Erlenmeyer flasks. Each flask was diluted to 50 mL with one of the pH buffer solutions; pH 4, pH 7, or pH 9. Samples were removed and labeled "TO" (time O-hours). Each Erlenmeyer flask was then placed in a 50°C agitating water bath.

Results and discussion
- Preliminary study:
- The test substance does not readily hydrolyze in pH 4, pH 7, or pH 9 buffered systems. Less than 10 percent hydrolysis had occurred in each of the test systems at 120 hours at 50.0 ± 0.5 C, therfore no further testing (Test 1, Test 2, or Test 3) was required.

Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Conclusions:
- Results for the preliminary test suggest that little, if any, hydrolysis occurs at the pH range of 4 to 9.
- Executive summary:
A preliminary hydrolysis test of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol was performed at pH values of 4, 7, and 9 at 50 °C. The test substance systems were prepared by diluting approximately 0.1 g of the test substance into 50 mL of the pH buffers. The test solutions were analyzed for the test substance using high performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection (HPLC/RI). The change in test substance concentration, over time, was calculated and reported as the percent hydrolysis. Less than 10 percent hydrolysis was observed in the pH 4, 7, and 9 test systems at 120 hours, therefore no further testing (Test 1, Test 2, or Test 3) was required.
