Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
General information:
If you feel unwell, seek medical advice (show the label where possible). Ensure that medical
personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, and take precautions to protect themselves.
4.1. Description of first aid measures
Inhalation:
If exposure occurs at greater than the set OEL limits leave the exposure area immediately. Call a
physician if symptoms develop or persist.
Skin contact
Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash skin with soap and water. In case of
eczema or other skin disorders: Seek medical attention and take along these instructions.
Eye contact
Rinse with water. Get medical attention if irritation develops and persists.
Ingestion
If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.
4.2. Most important symptoms
and effects, both acute and delayed:
Difficulty in breathing. May cause an allergic skin reaction. Dermatitis. Rash. Symptoms and
effects are generally associated with chronic exposure (i.e. lung fibrosis), and not acute.
4.3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed:
Provide general supportive measures and treat symptomatically. Keep victim under observation.
Symptoms may be delayed.
Fire-fighting measures
General fire hazards
Fine particles may form explosive mixtures with air.
5.1. Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media:
Use fire-extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding materials.
Unsuitable extinguishing media:
Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.
5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
The product is not flammable. May evolve toxic nitrogen/ sulphur/nickel/cobalt oxides and
ammonia when heated to decomposition. Very finely divided nickel metal in the fully reduced state can smoulder in the presence of oxygen or air. High concentrations of dust may form explosive mixture with air. Spontaneous combustion may occur when moisture content falls between 5-10%.
5.3. Advice for firefighters
Special protective equipment for firefighters
Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.
Special fire fighting procedures
Evacuate area. Stay upwind. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Prevent
runoff from fire control or dilution from entering streams, sewers or drinking water supply. Use
water fog to cool intact containers and nearby storage areas.
Specific methods
Use standard firefighting procedures and consider the hazards of other involved materials.
Accidental release measures
6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
For non-emergency personnel
Keep unnecessary personnel away. Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Wear
appropriate protective equipment and clothing during clean-up. Avoid inhalation of dust. Do not
touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing.
Ensure adequate ventilation. Local authorities should be advised if significant spillages cannot be
contained.
For emergency responders:
Keep unnecessary personnel away. Use personal protection recommended in Section 8 of the
SDS.
6.2. Environmental precautions
Avoid release to the environment. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Avoid
discharge into drains, water courses or onto the ground. Inform appropriate managerial or
supervisory personnel of all environmental releases.
6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
Avoid the generation of dusts during clean-up. Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk.
Sweep up or vacuum up spillage and collect in suitable container for disposal. Containers must be labeled.

Handling and storage
7.1. Precautions for safe handling
Obtain special instructions before use. Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read
and understood. Provide adequate ventilation. Minimise dust generation and accumulation. Avoid
breathing dust. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid prolonged exposure. Should be
handled in closed systems, if possible. Persons susceptible for allergic reactions should not
handle this product. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must not handle this product. Wear
appropriate personal protective equipment. Observe good industrial hygiene practices. Wash
hands before eating. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using the product.
7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Store locked up. Store in original tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
Store away from incompatible materials (see Section 10 of the SDS). If stored in bulk, minimize
dust generation by dampening with water or covering with a tarp or similar. If stored in packages,
ensure packages are adequately labelled, and check regularly for leaks or spills. Do not store in
unlabelled containers.

Exposure controls / personal protection
8.1. Control parameters
Occupational exposure limits

Follow standard monitoring procedures.
8.2. Exposure controls
Appropriate engineering controls
Good general ventilation (typically 10 air changes per hour) should be used. Ventilation rates
should be matched to conditions. If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation,
or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If
exposure limits have not been established, maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level.
Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment:
General information
Use personal protective equipment as required. Personal protection equipment should be chosen
according to the CEN standards and in discussion with the supplier of the personal protective
equipment.
Eye/face protection
If contact is likely, safety glasses with side shields are recommended.
Skin - hand protection
Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves. Nitrile/PVC/rubber gloves are recommended. Suitable gloves can be recommended by the glove supplier.
Other Respiratory protection:
Wear appropriate chemical resistant clothing.
In case of inadequate ventilation or risk of inhalation of dust, use suitable respiratory equipment
with particle filter.
Thermal hazards
Wear appropriate thermal protective clothing, when necessary.
Hygiene measures
Keep away from food and drink. Always observe good personal hygiene measures, such as
washing after handling the material and before eating, drinking, and/or smoking. Routinely wash
work clothing and protective equipment to remove contaminants. Contaminated work clothing
should not be allowed out of the workplace. Observe any medical surveillance requirements.
Environmental exposure controls:
Environmental manager must be informed of all major releases.
Stability and reactivity
10.1. Reactivity
The product is stable and non-reactive under normal conditions of use, storage and transport.
10.2. Chemical stability
Material is stable under normal conditions. Very finely divided nickel in the fully reduced state can
smoulder in the presence of oxygen or air.
10.3. Possibility of hazardous reactions
No dangerous reaction known under conditions of normal use. Hazardous polymerisation will not
occur.
10.4. Conditions to avoid
Contact with incompatible materials. Dust generation. Avoid heat, sparks, open flames and other
ignition sources.
10.5. Incompatible materials
Nickel is attacked slowly by sulphuric or dilute hydrochloric acid; it is readily attacked by nitric acid.
Evolving highly flammable hydrogen gas. Under special conditions nickel can react with carbon
monoxide in reducing atmospheres to form Nickel Carbonyl, a toxic gas. Avoid contact with
oxidizing agents (e.g. nitrates, peroxides).
10.6. Hazardous decomposition products
May evolve nitrogen/ sulphur/nickel/cobalt oxides and ammonia when heated to decomposition.
Disposal considerations
13.1. Waste treatment methods
Residual waste:
Dispose of in accordance with local regulations. Empty containers or liners may retain some
product residues. This material and its container must be disposed of in a safe manner (see:
Disposal instructions).
Contaminated packaging:
Since emptied containers may retain product residue, follow label warnings even after container is
emptied. Empty containers should be taken to an approved waste handling site for recycling or
disposal.
EU waste code:
06 03 13*
06 04 05* The Waste code should be assigned in discussion between the user, the producer and
the waste disposal company.
Disposal methods/information:
Collect and reclaim or dispose in sealed containers at licensed waste disposal site. Do not allow
this material to drain into sewers/water supplies. Do not contaminate ponds, waterways or ditches with chemical or used container. Dispose of contents/container in accordance with
local/regional/national/international regulations.
Special precautions
Dispose in accordance with all applicable regulations.
