Additional information

Zirconium is an odourless metal, present in solid state at 20°C and 101.3 kPa under different forms: powder, shot, sponge.

Zirconium is a bluish-black amorphous powder or grayish-white lustrous metal (platelets or flakes) of hexagonal lattice below 865°C ( α form).

Physical and chemical properties of this substance are :

  • melting point : 1856°C
  • boiling point : 3577°C
  • relative density : 6.434
  • water solubility : <0,05 mg/L
  • self-ignition temperature : 389°C

Particle size distribution for Zirconium powder: D50= 76.42 µm, D10= 32.64 µm, D90= 141.11 µm.

Flammability properties of zirconium highly depend on the form and particular size of the metal:

As stated in the harmonised Classification and Labelling (CLP 1272/2008, annex VI):

Zirconium powder is classified "pyr sol.1" and "water react 1"

Zirconium powder dry is classified "self heat 1"

A test conducted on Zirconium shot shows that it is highly flammable according to dir 67/548/EEC.
