First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove patient to fresh air. Seek medical attention if
symptoms develop.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash immediately with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes. Seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Water, foam, carbon dioxide and dry powder may be used.

Product arising from burning: Products of combustion may contain oxides of carbon,
nitrogen and silicon.

Product determined by test: N

Protective equipment: Full protective clothing and a self-contained breathing
apparatus must be worn.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Isolate spillage and remove personnel from the affected
area. Wear suitable protective clothing (see 2.3.1). Damp
down spill with water to avoid dust formation. Absorb spill
with a suitable inert material. Transfer to suitably
labelled containers. Wash spill site with water and
detergent. Collect the washings for disposal. Dispose of
waste material and washings by incineration in accordance
with local regulations.

Handling and storage

Handling: Observe the usual precautions for handling organic
chemicals. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid swallowing,
inhalation and contact with skin and eyes.
Chemical-resistant plastic or rubber gloves (BS 1651) and a
dust mask (half mask type BS 2091) should be worn. Large
quantities should be handled using an airfed plastic suit
manufactured in accordance with National Regulations (HSE
certificate CA/26/91-6266 or CA/25/91-6250), plastic rubber
gloves (BS 1651) and knee-length rubber boots (BS 1870).

Storage: Store in labelled, sealed containers in a cool dry,
well-ventilated area.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: The substance is to be supplied in double polythene bags in
clearly marked fibre kegs.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: Recovery from minor spillages is not feasible. Recovery from
larger spillages may be possible by dissolving in ethanol,
the solution filtered, the substance precipitated by adding
water and the solid collected and dried (using handling
precautions as at 2.3.1). (A622)

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: None known.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Not recommended.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance can be disposed of by incineration at a
suitable facility using temperatures of 1100 to 1200 deg C
with a minimum residence time of 2 seconds. Waste gas
treatment to remove nitrogen oxides and silicon dioxide
smoke should be fitted.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Not recommended. However, in the event of accidental
discharge, the substance has been shown not to be unduly
toxic to sewage micro-organisms.

Public at large - Possibility of recovery/recycling: The substance will not enter the public domain.
