Details on inoculum:
Municipal activated sludge from the wastewater treatment plant of the city Mannheim/Baden Württemberg (Germany). It was collected at 17 January 2006 from the aeration tank of the plant and aerated in the laboratory until use . Before use an appropriate aliquot of the activated sludge suspension was sieved with a finely woven mesh (mesh size about 0.8 mm), washed with tap water and pre-aerated for about 24 hours. The sludge of this suspension was adjusted to a concentration of 0.75 g/L of dry weight and then added to the test vessels to obtain a sludge concentration of 30 mg/L dry substance.

Additional information

The substance belongs to the category of perylene as indicated by its chemical core structure. Based on this structure and the chemical and biological stability of perylenes under environmental conditions, data from structural analogue perylenes can be used to cover this endpoint required under REACh.

The biodegradability of the analogue substances (CAS 81 -33 -4; EC 479 -300 -2; EC 475 -310 -6) were tested in a guideline studies following OECD 301F. The biodegradation rate was determined by measuring the O2 consumption of domestic activated sludge. At test termination after 28 days a degradation rate of <10 % was determined, respectively [BASF AG 1999, BASF 2006].
