Appearance/physical state/colour:
4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile is a clourless liquid with characteristic smell.
Melting point/freezing point:
The melting point of 4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile is reported in a Safety Data Sheet provided by AlzChem to be approx. 20 °C.
Boiling point:
Several test results and handbook data are available for the boiling point of 4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile. The boiling point seems to lie somewhere between 232 and 261 °C
Density:
The AlzChem Safety Data Sheet of 2014 reports the density of 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile to be 0.94.g/cm³ at 25 °C.
Particle size distribution:
In accordance with section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted as the substance 4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile is liquid, not solid.
Vapour pressure:
The AlzChem Safety Data Sheet of 2014 reports the vapour pressure of 4-tert-Butylbenzonitrile to be 121 mbar at 170 °C.
Flash point:
The flash point of 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile was determined according to DIN 51376 with a test apparatus Cleveland with an open cup and stated to be 111 °C.
Auto flammability:
A test for the determination of the auto flammability of 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile was performed according to DIN 51794. The result was that the auto flammability of 4-tert-Butylbenzonitril is 500 °C.
Explosiveness:
A investigates the mechanical sensitivity of 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile (the sensitivity to shock).
The test method is very similar to those of guideline A.14 and is described in another document. This fact does not impair the conclusion of the negative test result. 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitril is not sensitive to shock. The thermal sensitivity was not investigated within this study.Nevertheless according to this findings 4 -tert-Butylbenzonitrile is considerd to be non explosive and does not need to be classified.
