Since data for the aquatic toxicity of the Alcohols, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18 unsaturated, propoxylated, < 2.5 (CAS 70955-07-6) are only available for fish, the assessment of the toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and algae based on data from structural analogue ethoxylated alcohols. The majority of studies is conform to OECD and/or EC-guidelines and is partly GLP compliant.
Regarding to acute toxicity aquatic invertebrates turned out to be more sensitive than fish and algae. For fish one study is available with Alcohols, C16-18 (even numbered) and C18 unsaturated, propoxylated, < 2.5 (CAS 70955-07-6). After 96 hours of exposure the LC50 for zebra fish is 2500 mg/L. Similar low effects are reported for aquatic algae (EC50 72h > 100 mg/L) exposed to an structural analogue ethoxylated substance. The water flea (Daphnia magna) turned out to be more sensitive than fish and algae. The determined EL50 for Daphnia magna is 51 mg/L after 48 hours exposure to an analogue ethoxylated alcohol. Marine crustacea seems to be less sensitive, as a study with the copepod Acartia tonsa exposed to alkyl alcohol ethoxylate propoxylate (CAS 69227-22-1) demonstrates. For the marine copepod Acartia tonsa an LL50 of > 1000 mg/L is reported. Based on the lowest effect of all three trophic levels the substance has to be considered as acutely harmful to aquatic organisms.
The assessment of the long-term toxicity to aquatic organisms based on data from analogue ethoxylated substances. For fish the lowest NOEC value (0.11-0.28 mg/L) is reported for reproduction after 30 days of exposure to C14-15 alcohol ethoxylate (7 EO, CAS 68131-39-5), whereas the NOEC for reproduction of daphnids is 0.77 mg/L for C12-13 alcohol ethoxylate (6.5 EO). Hence it can be concluded that the substance may cause chronic effects on aquatic organisms.
