Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Tests on biodegradation are not relevant for inorganic substances.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Biodegradation in sediment: simulation test:

The substance is an inorganic hydroxide and as such is not subject to biodegradation. According to Annex VII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, 9.2.1.1 substances have not to be tested for ready biodegradability if substances are inorganic. Furthermore, magnesium hydroxide has a very low propensity for adsorption to sediment (derived Kd value of 1.65). In accordance with REACH Annex IX, endpoint 9.2.1.4 sediment simulation testing is foreseen for substances with a high potential for adsorption to sediment. Thus, testing is neither technically possible for this inorganic substance nor required due to the low potential for adsorption.

Biodegradation in water: simulation tests:

The substance is an inorganic hydroxide and as such is not subject to biodegradation. According to Annex VII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, endpoint 9.2.1.1, colums 2, substances have not to be tested for ready biodegradability if substances are inorganic. In accordance with REACH Annex IX, endpoint 9.2.1.2, column 2,  simulation testing on ultimated degradation in surface water can be waived for highly insolube or readily biodegradable substances. Both criteria do not apply to magnesium hydroxide. However, in accordance with REACH Annex XI, section 2, testing can nonetheless be omitted, as it is technically not possible to test inorganic substances for biodegradation in environmental compartments.
