With high probability the test substance shows no toxic effects to fish. Based on data for an structure analogue substance, the test substance has with high probability a low toxicity to aquatic organisms of the other two trophic levels (invertebrates, algae). The structure analogue substance was practically non-toxic to algal species tested. Over a longer period, the structure analogue substance was not toxic to the freshwater aquatic invertebrate tested (Daphnia magna) at test concentrations approximating the solubility limit of this compound (NOEC >= 0.0088 mg/L). However, higher test concentrations used in the tests resulted in physical immobilisation due to adherence of the test substance to the external body surfaces of the Daphnia. Physical immobilisation of 40 % or more of the test organisms occurred at analogue concentrations of 0.5 mg/L or greater.

Read across justification:

According to regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, paragraph 1.5., substances whose physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties are likely to be similar or follow a regular pattern as a result of structural similarity may be considered as a group, or "category" of substances. Environmental effects or environmental fate may be predicted from data for reference substance(s) within the group by interpolation to other substances in the group (read-across approach).

The substance (EC No. 402 -860 -6) has an identical basic structure as the read across substance (EC No. 438 -600 -3). The only difference between the two substances are the carbon side chains which vary in length. EC No. 402 -860 -6 contains 8 C-atoms whereas EC No. 438 -600 -3 contains 12 C-atoms. The physical and chemical properties are very similar. Thus, it is acceptable to predict the aquatic toxicity from data of EC No. 402 -860 -6.
