First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Remove subject to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if

breathing has stopped. Seek immediate medical attention.

Emergency measure - Eyes: Wash with copious amounts of water for 15-20 minutes. Seek

medical attention.

Emergency measure - Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area with

soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical

attention if irritation develops or persists.

Emergency measure - Ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately. Rinse mouth throroughly

with water if subject is conscious.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Use agents appropriate for surrounding environment. Water or

foam are suitable.

Product arising from burning: Combustion may result in the formation of carbon dioxide,

carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen.

Protective equipment: Use full protective clothing, with self-contained breathing

apparatus.

Accidental release measures

Emergency measures in case of spillage: Protective clothing and a respirator must be worn by

operators cleaning up any spillage.

Collect material to minimize dust generation; use wet mop,

damp sponge or wet/dry HEPA vacuum. Place collected

substance into a suitable container for disposal. Spill area

should be washed and well ventilated.

Handling and storage

Handling: Care must be taken by the operator to avoid causing the

substance to become airborne.  Approved respiratory

protection to EN 136 standard must be worn while handling.

For manufacturing areas, skin protection must be provided in

the form of coveralls, or full air suits along with latex or

other impermeable gloves. Rubber, neoprene or other gloves

may be required if solvents, corrosives or other chemicals

are present. Chemical safety glasses(EN 166 personal eye

protection specification) should be worn if a full face

respirator is not being worn.

Storage: The drums used for storage are 200 litre plastic-lined fibre

drums.  Store in sealed, upright containers at 15-30 °C.

Store in a dry area away from heat sources. Ensure

containers are correctly labelled.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: UN approved 200 litre, plastic-lined fibre drums.

for transport. Ensure the containers are securely held to

Dust explosion: The substance has been tested as a combustible dust. As with

any organic material, a suspended dust cloud of the

substance may ignite if subject to a strong ignition source

of static electricity. Provide appropriate bonding and

grounding to control static changes.

Disposal considerations

Industry - Possibility of recovery/recycling: BMS 183040-01 is consumed in the drug synthesis reaction in

which it is employed. Significant residue levels in the

reactor effluent are not expected. No practical means of

recovery or recycling are known.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: No method of neutralisation is known.

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Trace quantities are destroyed by biological oxidation in

the waste water treatment plant prior to discharge to the

sewage system (defined in Annex V 'categories of recommended

measures for rendering the substance harmless' as 641 -

Removal by controlled discharge to waste water plant).

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: Incineration is recommended for larger quantities. A

closed-cycle incinerator with scrubbers should be employed.

National regulations must be observed (defined in Annex V

'categories of recommended measures for rendering the

substance harmless' as 663 - Incinerate, high temperature,

long burn with blue gas scrubbing).

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: Trace quantities of material (0.5%) in aqueous washes and in

other liquors will be treated in secondary biological waste

water treatment plants before discharge to sewage works.
