Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Reference
Endpoint:
short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test)
GLP compliance:
yes
Specific details on test material used for the study:
SOURCE OF TEST MATERIAL
- Source of test material: sponsor
- purity: 96.6%
- Solubility in water: 14 g/L

STABILITY AND STORAGE CONDITIONS OF TEST MATERIAL
- Storage condition of test material: At room temperature in the dark
Analytical monitoring:
yes
Details on sampling:
At the beginning and the end of the test, the analytically measured test substance concentrations in the analyzed test solutions were 105.6 mg/L and 101.9 mg/L (mean measured concentration 103.8 mg/L), respectively.
Vehicle:
yes
Remarks:
distilled water
Test organisms (species):
Daphnia magna
Details on test organisms:
Daphnia magna Straus less than 24 hours old at the beginning of the test, laboratory cultured, apparently healthy and bred by Scenedesmus obliquus are used in this test.
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
yes
Total exposure duration:
48 h
Test temperature:
23°C
pH:
7.83 - 8.39
Dissolved oxygen:
>= 90%
Details on test conditions:
Based on the result of the preliminary test, a limit test may be performed at 100 mg/L in order to demonstrate that the EC50 is greater than this concentration. The limit lest is carried out using 20 Daphnia magna which are divided into four groups of five animal each, with the same number in the blank controls and the auxiliary solvent controls.
Place 40 ml of standard dilution water in each 50 ml culture dish selected astest vessels, in order
to ensure that at least 2 ml of test solution should be provided for each animal. The test temperature should be 22°C ± 1°C, and the photoperiod should be 12h:12h (dark : light).
The dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH of the controls and the test solutions of test substance should be measured at the beginning and the end of the test.
Key result
Duration:
48 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
> 100 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
mortality
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Based on these results the test substance, potassium dimethyl 5-sulphonatoisophthalate, has no acute immobilization effect on the test Daphnia under these test conditions, and the hazardous level of the test substance is slight.
In the controls and the treatments at the Ioading rate of 100 mg/L (mean measured concentration 103.8 mg/L), no acute immobilization effects were determined during the test period of 48 hours. Therefore, the 48h-EC50 was higher than the loading rate of 100 mg/L (mean measured concentration 103.8 mg/L).
