Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Test organisms (species):
activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage
Details on inoculum:
Test system Non-adapted activated sludge
Receipt: 2019-06-24
Activated sludge from the sewage plant at Hildesheim is well suited as it receives predominantly municipal sewage and hardly any industrial chemical waste.
Municipal sewage treatment plant, 31137 Hildesheim, Germany

The activated sludge was washed twice with chlorine free tap water. After the second washing the settled sludge was resuspended in mineral salts medium and was maintained in an aerobic condition by aeration with CO2 free air for two days before test start. 4.98 mL/L of this mixture were used to initiate inoculation (25.0 mg/L dw).

Details on results:
In the toxicity control containing both test and reference item a biodegradation of 70% was
determined within 14 days, with 84% after 28 days. The biodegradation of the reference item was
not inhibited by the test item in the toxicity control.
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
A concentration of 14 mg/L of 2-hexyldecanoic acid did not inhibit the biodegradation of the reference substance in the toxicity control of a OECD 301B guideline study.
Executive summary:

No inhibition of the biodegradation of the reference substance (sodium benzoate) was observed with 14 mg/L of 2-hexyldecanoic acid in the toxicity control of a OECD 301B ready biodegradability study. According to Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance this value can be considered a NOEC.

Description of key information

In a OECD 301B guideline study a concentration of 14 mg/L of 2-hexyldecanoic acid did not inhibit the biodegradation of the reference substance (sodium benzoate) in the toxicity control.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
