Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is found to be readily biodegradable and the applied test concentrations are in the range of concentrations that can be expected in the influent of a sewage treatment plant

Description of key information

The toxicity to microorganisms endpoint is waived as the substance is qualified as readily biodegradable at test concentrations in the range of concentations that can be expected in the influent of a sewage treatment plant.

An effect value is nonetheless determined based on data available for the close structural analogue Jasmal (CAS# 18871-14-2). For Jasmal STP toxicity data are available from a standard inhibition control in the OECD TG 301D test. Based on the percent degradation of sodium benzoate when tested in combination with the test substance (toxicity control), it is concluded that the test substance is not toxic to microorganisms at a concentration of 100 mg/L (>25% degradation based on ThOD). For Jessemal the NOEC is determined at 100 mg/L.
