Description of key information
Mean CO2 evolution from 5-Amino-o-cresol remained at 0% of the theoretical CO2 yield over the 28 days. Therefore, it cannot be classified as readily biodegradable.

Additional information
A ready biodegradation test, following OECD 301B guideline and the GLP, was conducted on 5 -Amino-o-cresol. Inoculum was activated sludge collected from one of the return lines at Burley Menston sewage treatment works (West Yorkshire, UK), which has a predominantly domestic waste-water catchment. The test material was tested at 15 mg C/L. The test material reference substance and blank control groups were tested in duplicates. One vessel was used for toxicity control.
Mean CO2 evolution from 5 -Amino-o-cresol remained at 0% of the theoretical CO2 yield over the 28 days. The deviation between replicate treatments was <20% (met the validity criteria of the guideline).
For toxicity control, the rate of biodegradation of the reference substance in the presence of test substance (68% at 28 days) was lower than that of the reference substance alone, suggesting that the test substance may have had a slight inhibitory effect on the sludge micro-organisms under the test conditions.
The IC concentration of the test inoculated mineral salts medium concentrate was 0.01 mg carbon/L (0.02%). The validity criterion of less than 5% carbon loading was therefore met. The total carbon dioxide production in the two blank control vessels was 81 and 79 mg, satisfying the validity criterion of < 120 mg.
The Reference material, Sodium benzoate, met the validity criteria for the test, greater than 60% biodegradation within 14 d, and within the 10 d window. Pass level of >60% reached at Day 10. The mean percentage biodegradation reached 61% by Day 5 and 87% by Day 28.
Based on the above, 5 -Amino-o-cresol cannot be classified as readily biodegradable.
