Studies evaluating the short or long term toxicity of Diethylammonium chloride (CAS 660-68-4) to aquatic organisms are not available. Therefore short term toxicity data for all three trophic levels and chronic data for aquatic invertebrates and algae from the analogues substance N-ethylethanamine (CAS 109-89-7) were used for the environmental assessment.

Algae was the most sensitive tested organism with an ErC50 (96 h) of 20 mg/L and a ErC0 (96 h) of 2 mg/L, followed by aquatic invertebrates with an EC50 (48 h) of 56 mg/L and a NOEC (48 h) of 4.2 mg/L. No short term toxic effects were observed by the read across substance towards fish up to a concentration of 100 mg/L, when the pH was neutral.

Furthermore the substance is not considered toxic to microorganisms based on results of the read across substance (EC10 (30 min) > 1000 mg/L) and its rapid biodegradability.
