Conclusion on classification

For inorganic compounds, biotic degradation in the environment is an irrelevant process but abiotic dissociation and subsequent interactions occur instead. Nonetheless, for classification purposes, inorganic substances are to be considered as non-rapidly degradable. Aquatic toxicity data for three trophic levels (fish, invertebrates and alga) are available for potassium cryolite. From these data a critical effect value for classification of >10 mg/L was derived (Fish 96h-LC50). No long-term aquatic toxicity tests are available. No information on sediment toxicity and terrestrial toxicity is available. According to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 for the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP), potassium cryolite is to be classified as harmful to the aquatic environment, Category Chronic 3; H412 (Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).
