Description of key information

biodegradation

Ready biodegradability of the main constituent trisodium trioxalatoferrate was assessed in the Modified OECD Screening Test according to OECD guideline 301E. The test item was exposed to aerobic activated sludge from the aeration tank of a domestic waste water treatment plant for 28 days. Biodegradation was evaluated based on DOC removal. The biodegradability of the test item was calculated to be 99 % after 28 days of incubation. The test item reached the pass level of 70 % for ready biodegradability within the 10 day window and can therefore be termed as readily biodegradable.

The procedure control sodium benzoate reached 97 % biodegradation after 14 days, thus confirming suitability of inoculum and test conditions.

stability - hydrolysis

The main constituent of the reaction mass - trisodium trioxalatoferrate - is readily biodegradable. Testing of abiotic degradation is therefore not required according to Annex VIII (section 9.2.2.1) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The second constituent - sodium sulphate - dissociates in aqueous solution completely to form very stable ions. This has to be regarded as dissolution and not as "hydrolysis".

adsorption/desorption

Trisodium trioxalatoferrate is highly soluble in water and pratically insoluble in n-octanol resulting in an log pow - 2.5. According to column 2 / Annex VIII of regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 no testing of absorption-desorption behaviour of the substance is required. An absorption/desorption screening test according to OECD guideline 121 is scientifically not necessary.
