Experimental data on the toxicity of the substance on algae or fish are not available. The acute toxicity to fish has been predicted by development of a prediction model for chlorinated alkanes. In this model, the Log LC50 of the substance for fish has been estimated to be 2.18 µM (corresponding toa LC50 of 16 mg/L). In addition, a QSAR estimation with the program ECOSAR using the experimental value for logKow, water solubility and melting point has been performed to predict toxicity to aquatic organisms. According to the QSAR analysis, the substance belongs to the class of neutral organics and the estimation revealed a LC50 of 28.65 mg/L for fish (96 h), a LC50 of 17.45 mg/L for daphnids (48 h) and an EC50 of 10.38 mg/L for green algae (96 h).
Among several compounds, 2 -Chloro-2 -methylbutane has also been examined in a test evaluate the acute lethal toxicity of environmental pollutants to aquatic organisms. Daphnia (Daphnia pulex) were tested with six different concentrations of the test substance and mortality was observed after incubation of 4 h. The LC50 (4h) has been determined to be 2.37 mg/L showing that the substance can be harmful to daphnia. Nevertheless, the test system has been considered to be unsuitable for the test substance as it does not refer to the substance properties and the documentation is insufficient for an assessment of the data.
Overall, the effect levels of the available and reliable (QSAR) data are in the range from 10 mg/L to 20 mg/L and indicates that the substance might possess a potential to be harmful to aquatic organisms.
