No exotoxicological information about Acid Red 357 (AR357) are available, thus a read across approach has been considered in order to assess the aquatic toxicity potential of the substance. Adequate chronic toxicity studies are not available, therefore the aquatic toxicity assessment and classification are based mainly on the short-term toxicity information on the structural analogous Acid Red 315 (AR315 - Similar Substance 01).
AR357 has a log Kow lower than 4 (i.e. logPow: -1.49, indicating a low potential for bioaccumulation) and it is expected to be not rapidly degradable.
According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), acute aquatic toxicity is normally determined using a fish 96-hour LC50, a crustacean species 48-hour EC50 and/or an algal species 72- or 96-hour EC50; nevertheless it is also specified in the Regulation that data on other species (e.g. Lemna spp.) shall also be considered if the test methodology is suitable. These species cover a range of trophic levels and taxa and are considered as surrogate for all aquatic organisms.
Data are available for Daphnia magna and Lemna gibba.
According to the CLP Regulation (EC 12720/2008) criteria for the identification of the classification categories for hazardous to the aquatic environment, the available outcomes on the AR315 fixed the aquatic toxicity effect level between 10 and 100 mg/l; this classification category is supported by results recorded in both the short-term toxicity to Daphnia and the toxicity to aquatic plants, in which the EC50 related to the effects on the grown rate is recorded in the same range of values.
In conclusion, the AR315 is classified as Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412) according to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008).
