Description of key information
Appearance/physical state/colour:
In the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (Weastet al.,1990), a peer-reviewed document, Guanidine nitrate is reported to be a solid white organic crystalline substance at 20°C and 1013hPa. Crystal habits are Equants which is reported in the publication of American Cyanamid Company (1937).
Melting point/freezing point:
A melting point of guanidinium nitrate in the range between 212 and 217 °C is reported.
Boiling point:
The boiling point of Guanidinium nitrate can not be determined according to decomposition.
Relative density:
The density of Guanidine nitrate is reported to be 1.436 g/cm3 at 30°C.
Particle size distribution
9% of the particles of Guanidine Nitrate have a diameter < 125 µm, 2.2% < 71µm
Vapour pressure:
Measurement of the vapour pressure of guanidine nitrate is not possible at normal conditions.
Partition coefficient:
The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of Guanidine Nitrate was determined to be <0.02 (log Pow: <-1.70) at 20 ± 1°C
Water solubility:
The water solubility of Guanidine Nitrate is 256g/L at 20°C.
Solubility in organic solvent:
no data
Surface tension:
Measurement of surface tension of Guanidine nitrate is waived based on chemical structure of substance.
Flash point:
Measurement of flash point fo Guanidine nitrat is waived based according to physical state solid.
Auto flammability:
Guanidine nitrate did not ignite in any of the tests performed. Bevor ignition the substance decomposed and fumed off. Self ignition temperature above 360 °C.
Flammability:
Guanidinium nitrate is not flammable. According to structure Guanidinnitrate is not pyrophoric and will not liberate flammable gases on contact with water.
Explosiveness:
As the Guanidine nitrate sample was neither mechanical sensitive to shock or friction nor thermally sensitive, according to the criteria of EEC test method A.14 it is not representing an explosive hazard and has not to be considered to present a danger of explosion.
Oxidising properties:
Guanidine nitrate has no oxidizing properties according to the definition in the EEC-guideline 92/69/EWG, A.17 (AlzChem, 2004). In contrast, in another study of Hellemeir (1994) the substance is classified as Lighting active material (presenting oxidising potential properties) according to German TRGS 515 Category 5.1 Group C. According to the experimental results the oxidizing properties of guanidinium nitrate are comparable to those of Ammonium peroxydisulfate. Nethertheless the first study shows a higher validity according to the EEC-guideline 92/69/EWG, A.17 and it can be concluded that the substance has no oxidising properties.
Oxidition reduction potiential
no data
Stability in organic solvents:
Testing of stability in organic solvents is considered scientifically unjustified
Dissoziation constant:
In the peer-reviewed document of Carignan and Satriana (1967) the dissociation constant of the conjugate base of Guanidine nitrate is reported to be Kb = 1.51x10E-4 and the hydrolysis constant Kh = 6.75x10E-11 (25 °C). The calculated pKa was 10.2 (calculated with pKa+pKb=14).
Viscosity:
According to the REACH Regulation (Annex XI, 1.), a study does not need to be conducted if the available data are sufficient for assessment. The substance is a solid at ambient temperature. According to the TGDs (R7a, 7.1.18.4), viscosity is relevant only to liquids.
