Acute toxicity studies have been conducted in fish, daphnia and algae. In summary, for the aquatic compartment dipropylene glycol methyl ether acetate shows EC50s/LC50s that exceed 1000 mg/l in daphnia (48 hr) and algae (72 hr). The LC50 (96 hr) for fish was greater than 100 mg/l.

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test showed an EC50 greater than 1000 mg/l for micro-organisms.

Dipropylene glycol methyl ether acetate is classified as inherently biodegradable meeting the specific criteria. Therefore, ultimate biodegradation is expected in freshwater. The risk assessment shows that the PEC/PNEC ratio is clearly < 1 in surface water, indicating no need for further information or testing. According to REACH Annex IX requirements, long-term toxicity testing shall only be considered when the chemical safety assessment indicates the need for further investigations. Hence, long-term testing in aquatic species (fish and daphnia magna) can be waived for dipropylene glycol methyl ether acetate.
