In order to classify the substance according to GHS relevant endpoint data available for Dodecannitrile was read-acrossed to Caprinonitrile based on structural similarities. Dodecannitrile is as well as Decanntrile based on aliphatic chains of hydrocarbon atoms. These chains which consist of an even-numbered number of hydrocarbon atoms, are saturated and possess a nitrile-group at its end. Decannitrile consists of 10 hydrocarbon atoms and Dodecannitrile is the next higher analogon with 12 hydrocarbon atoms. Generally it can be assumed that the next lower analogon (Decannitrile) has the same properties as the basic substance (Dodecannitrile). Furthermore it is obvious that if any chemical reaction takes place with those two substances then the nitrile group is the only functional group of this chemicals were a reaction should occur.

Available data for Dodecannitrile was found in a IUCLID 4 dataset of the substance Cocosnitrile (CAS: 61789 -53 -5, EC: 263 -066 -1). In this dataset two studies on skin irritation with Dodecannitrile (according to OECD 404 under GLP) are metioned. Both disclose irritation after a four hour lasting application with Dodecannitrile.
In order to classify the substance Caprinonitrile (without any unnecessary animal testing) this results for Dodecannitrile are read acrossed and lead to a classification of Caprinonitrile as Skin irritating Cat. 2 (according to GHS).

In considerations of safety, Caprinonitrile was classfied as 'irritating' following the results of the studies with Dodecannitrile.
Justification for selection of eye irritation endpoint:
A read-across approach was choosen for classification. Dodecannitrile is the next higher analogon to Decannitrile.

There is no data available on skin irritation tests with Caprinonitrile (Decannenitrile). In order to classify the substance according to GHS relevant endpoint data available for Dodecannitrile and Cocosnitrile was read-acrossed to Caprinonitrile based on structural similarities (see rationale for reliability). Two testing resulta for Dodecannitrile were found, which disclosed skin irritation after four hour exposure time. This contrasts with a non eye irritating testing result which was found for Cocosnitrile. Nevertheless, in considerations of safety, Caprinonitrile was classified as 'skin irritating cat. 2' following the results of the studies with Dodecannitrile.

In order to classify the substance according to GHS relevant endpoint data available for Dodecannitrile and Cocosnitrile was read-acrossed to Caprinonitrile based on structural similarities (see rationale for reliability). Dodecannitrile, as well as Cocosnitrile is not irritating to the rabbit eye under the testing conditions. Because of this reason Caprinonitrile was also classified as not eye irritating.
