Additional information
Skin irritation:
Three Vienna White rabbits received application of about 0.5 ml test item onto the shaved skin for 4 hours under semi-occlusive conditions (BASF AG, 1990) according to OECD 404 guideline; the animals were observed for skin reaction during 8 days. Readings were done at time point 24, 48 and 72 hours. Scoring of the skin findings was based on the scoring system outlined in OECD 404 guideline. The mean erythema score (24/48/72 hours) was 0.8 (0.3 in 2/3 animals, 1.7 in 1/3 animals) and was completely reversible within 8 days. No edema was seen in 2/3 animals, the third animal had a mean score (24/48/72 hours) of 0.3 leading to an overall mean of 0.1 in the three animals. The edema in the one animals was fully reversible within 48 hours. Thus the item was not irritating to the skin of rabbits under the test conditions chosen.
Eye irritation:
A eye irritation study according to OECD 405 guideline was performed (BASF AG, 1990). Three white rabbits (vienne white and new zealand white) were used. The test substance (0.1 ml) was applied undiluted into the conjunctival sac of one eye of the animals. Readings for eye irritation findings were performed 1, 24, 48 and 72 h as well as 8 or 9 d after test substance application. The mean cornea score (24/48/72 hours) was 0, the mean iris score (24/48/72 hours) was also 0. The mean score for redness of the conjunctivae (24/48//2 hours) was 1.3 (1/3 animals with 1.7, 1/3 animals with 1.3 and 1/3 animals with 1.0) and the mean score for edema (24/48/72 hours) was 0.6 (1/3 animals with 1.3, 1/3 animals with 0.3 and 1/3 animals with 0). All findings were fully reversible within 8 -9 days. Thus, the test item was not irritating to the eye of rabbits under the test conditions chosen.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Since the test item was neither irritant to the skin nor to the eye according to current scoring criteria, there is no need for classification according to the EU Directive 67/548/EC and according to the CLP Regulation 1272/2008 .
