The flammability of the test material was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline UN Test N.1 from the United Nations Document ‘Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods’ under GLP conditions. The study was awarded a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the principles for assessing data quality set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).
The test is designed to measure the rate at which combustion moves away from an ignition source, along a train of powder. When the powder has burned a distance of 80 mm the rate of burning over the next 100 mm is measured. The test is repeated six times unless a positive result is obtained earlier.
If a positive result is obtained with non-metallic powders, one mL of a wetting solution is applied to the train beyond the timed zone. Whether or not the wetted zone stops the propagation of the flame determines the packing group of the material.
From the preliminary screening test, the sample was seen not to ignite and therefore no further testing is required.
The sample melted and decomposed to black when in contact with the ignition source. During contact with the ignition source a yellow/green flame was observed, which extinguished upon removal of the ignition source. No burning propagation was observed.
The test material is therefore not a readily combustible substance of Division 4.1.
In accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the studies to investigate flammability on contact with water and pyrophoric properties do not need to be performed, as based on chemical structure and experience in use water reactivity and pyrophoricity are not to be expected and hence testing does not appear scientifically necessary.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
