Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish (96 -h LC50 = 145 mg/L).
Hydrolysis product palmitic acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish. No toxic effects within range of water solubility (96 -h LC50 > 6.9 mg/L).
Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely toxic for fish (pH-dependent; 96 -h LC50 = 4.92 mg/L).

Long-term toxicity to fish

Not an information requirement for the registered tonnage band.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride: No data.

Hydrolysis product palmitic acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates within range of water solubility (48 -h EC50 > 0.25 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic for aquatic invertebrates (pH dependent; 48 -h EC50 = 0.492 mg/L).

Long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Parent compound valeryl chloride: No data.

Hydrolysis product valeric acid: No toxic effect within range of water solubility (21 -d NOEC > 0.22 mg/L).

Hydrolysis product HCl: No data.

Toxicity to aquatic algae

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride: no data.

Hydrolysis product palmitic acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to algae within range of water solubility (72 -h ErC50 > 0.6 mg/L, 72 -h NOEC = 0.6 mg/L).
Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely very toxic to aquatic algae (pH dependent; 72 -h ErC50 = 0.492 mg/L).

Toxicity to microorganisms

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride: No data.

Hydrolysis product palmitic acid: An inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Hydrolysis product HCl: No data.

Additional information

Palmitoyl chloride hydrolyses very quickly to palmitic acid (CAS 57 -10 -3) and HCl (CAS 7647 -01 -0) (t1/2 < 5 min, see IUCLID Ch. 5.1.2). Therefore, the assessment is mainly based on the hydrolysis product palmitic acid.

Water solubility of palmitic acid (CAS 57 -10 -3) = 0.04 mg/L, at 25 °C, Robb 1966, PhysProp database of EPI Suite v4.11
