Description of key information

Metal carboxylates such as 2-ethylhexanoic acid, iron salt are substances consisting of a metal cation and a carboxylic acid anion. Based on the solubility of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, iron salt in water, a complete dissociation resulting in iron cations and 2-ethylhexanoate anions may be assumed under environmental conditions. Abiotic degradation is not relevant for iron cations. After evaporation or exposure to the air, 2-ethylhexanoic acid will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes. Based on the lack of hydrolysable functional groups, hydrolysis is not expected to be an important fate path for 2-ethylhexanoate.
