Discussion
In order to aid in the interpretation of the DSC thermograms, an aliquot of test item was placed into a small boiling tube, which was attached adjacent to the bulb of the mercury in glass thermometer, and then placed into the heating bath. During heating, visual observations were recorded periodically, or when a significant change in appearance / physical state was observed.
Significant sample observations and temperatures are summarized in the following table (Visual Evaluation on Heating):
Temperature (°C) |
Observation |
23 |
The test item was a clear, colorless liquid. |
194 |
The test item appeared cloudy, and then suddenly solidified and cracked. |
240 |
More fractures have appeared. |
255 |
The test item is becoming pale yellow in color. |
270 |
The test item is darkening, slightly less pale yellow in color. |
285 |
The test item has changed to an amber color. |
305 |
No change. Testing halted. |
Assignment of the differential scanning calorimetry thermograms generated during thermal analysis was performed with the aid of observations recorded during the modified liquid bath method visual evaluation.
Conclusion
The test item underwent reaction (possibly polymerization) from approximately 178 °C (451 K) at 101.3 kPa.
